Case, Mechanism & Chime

This mahogany wall clock houses a quality Anglo Swiss double-barrel, brass, spring-driven chiming mechanism. The mahogany case incorporates a moulded brass bezel, a pendulum access door on the underside, and a mechanism-viewing door on the left-hand side, so you can watch the movement while it runs. Because our restorers have cleaned and French-polished the mahogany case by hand, the timber's grain now shows its original colour and patination. On the back of the clock, meanwhile, sits a bracket for wall mounting.

Chime On/Off Function

The clock chimes once on the half hour, and it also strikes the full number of hours on the hour. Additionally, the left-hand hole in the dial winds the clock movement, while the right-hand hole winds the chiming movement. As a result, you can choose whether to enable or disable the chime, so you decide when you hear it.

The movement has been restored, so it now runs in good mechanical order and keeps reliable time. You can adjust the pendulum's length by opening the door beneath the case, and this lets you regulate the clock's speed. The clock also comes with a winding key, which winds the mechanism through the centre of the dial.

Dial, Bezel & Hands

The dial itself is an ivory-colour tin dial with black Roman numerals, and it pairs with an elegant, shaped hour and minute hand. A hinged, solid-brass bezel houses the glass that protects the dial while the clock is in use, and it opens on a right-hand hinge so that you can adjust or set the time. Furthermore, a catch on the back of the case locks the bezel in place, which stops it from swinging open by accident.

This clock shows nominal old-use marks to the case and tin dial, but nothing significant given the item's age (see photos). At some point in the past, someone replaced the painted tin dial. The brass-hinged bezel works well, although it has some movement in the hinge. The bezel-locking latch is present and working, and it prevents the bezel from opening. Overall, the mahogany case remains in very good condition, and we have cleaned and French-polished it by hand. Similarly, the clock has been cleaned and mechanism serviced, so it now works well and keeps good time.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Dial clocks with turned wooden surrounds were widely produced throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries for public institutions such as railway stations, post offices, and schools, where precise timekeeping and clear readability from a distance were essential.

These timepieces typically feature turned mahogany, oak, or walnut surrounds housing a brass bezel, painted metal or enamel dial face, and a mechanical pendulum movement inside a rear box housing.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-turned wooden surrounds, cast brass bezels with glass doors, hand-painted or printed Roman numerals, and winding keyholes in the dial corresponding to double or triple movement barrels.

A large round mahogany wall clock functions effectively as a focal point above a sideboard, in a hallway, or alongside minimal modern furnishings to provide visual warmth and historical contrast.

Mechanical wall clocks require regular winding with an appropriately sized key, level mounting on the wall to ensure correct pendulum movement, and periodic professional servicing of the movement to clean and lubricate the gears.
