An engraved glass bowl and cover from the Victorian period presents clear glass decorated with wheel engraving depicting hunting scenes with a stag motif alongside floral patterns. The rim of the cover features a black enamel finish with white dot detailing, complemented by a round black finial on top and a black scroll-decorated border encircling the bowl. The piece is in very good condition with a few very minor rubs in places, measuring 18 cm wide. Positioned on a sideboard top, the bowl serves as an ornamental container suitable for decorative display within an English Country House interior. The transparent body and intricate motifs catch light, adding visual texture to living spaces or dining rooms when placed upon flat surfaces.

Wheel-engraved glass gained prominence across Central Europe and Britain during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Artisans used copper wheels coated with abrasive mixtures to carve detailed pictorial scenes, geometric scrolls, and nature-inspired motifs directly into the glass surface.

These vessels were typically hand-blown using clear soda-lime or lead glass. Decorative designs were executed through copper-wheel engraving, and contrasting rims were created by applying dark enamel pigments or stained overlays that were fired into the glass.

Authentic pieces generally display subtle irregularities from hand-blowing, such as minor air bubbles or polished pontil marks on the base. Crisp, hand-cut engraving details with varying depths and slight wear patterns on contact points also indicate genuine period origin.

A lidded glass bowl functions well as a focal point on a polished sideboard, a console table, or a vanity unit. Displaying the item against contrasting dark wood surfaces or within lit glass cabinets accentuates the etched details and transparent qualities.

Wash the item gently by hand in lukewarm water using mild detergent and a soft cloth. Avoid hot water, abrasive cleaners, scouring pads, and dishwashers, as extreme temperatures and harsh chemicals can damage hand-applied enamel borders.
