Introduced in the late 18th century as an alternative to brass dials, painted iron dialsoften referred to as white dialsfeatured hand-painted numerals, floral spandrels, and decorative motifs. They were predominantly produced for British longcase and bracket clocks during the Georgian era.

These dials were typically fabricated from a sheet of iron painted with a white or off-white enamelled ground. The numerals, minute tracks, and decorative corner spandrels were hand-painted, while the hands were crafted from pierced wrought iron or steel.
