Edwardian 18ct Gold Amethyst and Old Cut Diamond Lavalier Necklace, Antique Ca 1910

1900 - 1920
Description

A fabulous Edwardian amethyst and old-cut diamond lavalier necklace, dating to circa 1910.

Beautifully handcrafted in 18-carat yellow gold, this wonderfully delicate necklace has an elegant openwork design characteristic of the Edwardian period.

At its centre is a rich mauve-purple round-cut amethyst, finely millegrain collet set within a circular gold frame. A slender articulated knife-edge drop descends from the centre, punctuated by a sparkling old-cut diamond and terminating in a second round-cut amethyst.

Two graceful navette-shaped openwork links decorate the necklace, each set with an old-cut diamond. Further diamonds are arranged along the adjoining links, with seven beautifully bright and lively old-cut diamonds in total. They sparkle wonderfully as the necklace moves and contrast beautifully with the vivid purple amethysts and warm yellow gold.

The light, symmetrical construction gives the necklace an almost celestial appearance, while the articulated drop moves elegantly when worn.

A particularly refined example of Edwardian jewellery, combining the delicacy of the period with subtle Art Nouveau influence. This enchanting necklace sits beautifully at the neckline and would make a very special addition to an antique jewellery collection.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A lavalier necklace typically features a lightweight chain terminating in an openwork or geometric pendant with a central gemstone and dangling drop accents. Popular during the Edwardian era from 1901 to 1910, these design elements emphasized symmetry, delicate wirework, and airy aesthetics.

Edwardian jewellers frequently crafted lavalier pieces using 15ct or 18ct yellow gold and platinum. These metals were combined with colored gemstones such as amethysts, peridots, and sapphires, frequently set alongside small old European or single-cut diamonds and seed pearls.

Authentic Edwardian pieces often display fine millegrain borders, knife-edge wire construction, hand-cut gemstones, and delicate hand-finished settings. Gold purity marks, makers marks, or period-specific assay stamps also help confirm authenticity.

An antique lavalier necklace serves as an elegant focal point for formal evening wear or can be layered with fine minimalist gold chains to create a curated, contemporary look for everyday occasions.

Store the necklace flat in a lined jewellery box to prevent delicate links and wirework from tangling or bending. Clean gently using a soft, dry lint-free cloth, avoiding ultrasonic cleaners and chemical solutions that could damage historical gemstone settings.
