Antique Belt Buckles

A small group of jewellery held together by one motif, the strap passing through a buckle, worn as a ring, bangle or waist clasp rather than used to fasten anything.

Introduction

Antique Belt Buckles

The heading covers actual wearable buckles, but the form you're most likely to meet is the buckle ring. Ten of the thirty listings on Sellingantiques are rings rather than buckles: gold bands modelled as a strap through a buckle, often with the tail overlapping the shank, in 9ct, 15ct or 18ct.

The buckle worked as a fastening from antiquity, but from the middle of the 19th century jewellers took the motif up as decoration on its own terms. Large hallmarked silver buckles for women's sashes and belts were a staple of the Birmingham trade around 1900, and silver appears in eleven of the titles here, including belt-and-buckle sets, bangles and cuffs.

Around the edges sit enamel and Art Nouveau buckles, a scarab motif that turns up twice, and work from a long way outside Birmingham: a Meiji Satsuma buckle painted with dragons, a Telkari filigree belt from the Black Sea coast of Turkey, an Austrian silver gilt and turquoise choker buckle, and three French pieces. Scarf clips, toggles and buckle brooches account for a handful more.

Dating clusters at the turn of the century. Edwardian and Victorian pieces dominate, the dated field runs from 1870 to 1940, and only ten listings carry a clean year. Titles are often the sharper guide: hallmark years of 1891, 1892, 1893, 1900, 1902, 1907, 1908 and 1914 appear in titles whose period is given only as a decade.

What sets them apart

Where The Range Splits

Metal does most of the work. The upper listings are almost all 18ct or 18K gold, and the two highest-priced pieces in the archive are both French and both gold. Silver buckles, silver bangles and gilded metal sit lower, and the bottom of the range is held by a tortoiseshell and brass scarf toggle merely shaped as a belt and buckle.

Stones lift a piece further. Four of the buckle rings specify diamonds, including old cuts, and all of them sit well above the plain gold bands. A legible hallmark counts for something too: titles naming an office and a year, Birmingham far more often than anywhere else and Chester just once, are consistently priced above those offering only a period label.

Weight and origin make up the rest. Where a gramme figure is quoted it's used as a selling point, and the heaviest things in the group are silver rather than gold, two English belt-and-buckle sets at 122g and 108g against gold rings of 8.1g and 5.5g. The French, Japanese and Turkish work occupies the middle and upper reaches.

The Antique Belt Buckles Glossary

Buckle ring
A ring modelled as a strap passing through a buckle, sometimes with the tail overlapping the band. The single commonest form filed under this heading.
Belt and buckle
Used in titles for a matched silver belt with its buckle together, rather than the buckle on its own.
Hallmark
The assay office marks that date the piece and certify the metal. Birmingham appears far more often than any other office in this group, with Chester once.
9ct / 15ct / 18ct
Gold fineness in carats out of 24. All three turn up on the rings, and 18K on the French pieces.
Silver gilt
Silver with a gold surface layer, as on the Austrian turquoise choker buckle.
Old cut
Hand-cut diamonds of pre-modern proportions, named on one Edwardian 18ct buckle ring.
Questions people ask

Antique Belt Buckles: Frequently Asked Questions

Why are so many listings rings?

The belt-and-buckle motif was adopted by jewellers as ornament, and the ring was the form it suited best. A third of everything filed under this heading on Sellingantiques is a ring rather than a wearable buckle.

They're gold bands shaped as a strap through a buckle, in 9ct, 15ct and 18ct, several Birmingham hallmarked for 1891, 1908 and 1914.

How were the silver buckles worn?

As waist ornament. Large hallmarked silver buckles were made for women's sashes and belts, and were a staple of the Birmingham trade around 1900.

Some are listed as belt-and-buckle sets, the belt supplied with its buckle. Two of those were weighed at 122g and 108g, the heaviest pieces in the group.

What dates do these pieces carry?

The dated field spans 1870 to 1940, with Edwardian and Victorian entries dominating and the 1900s and 1910s behind them. Three listings say only "19th Century".

Hallmark years quoted in titles run tightly through the turn of the century: 1891, 1892, 1893, 1900, 1902, 1907, 1908 and 1914. Where a title carries a year and the period field doesn't, the title is the more precise of the two.

Are any of these made outside Britain?

Roughly a fifth are. A Meiji-period Satsuma buckle painted with dragons, a Telkari filigree belt from the Black Sea coast of Turkey, an Austrian silver gilt and turquoise choker buckle, and three French pieces including damascene steel and a garnet snake buckle.

That non-British work sits in the middle and upper part of the range.

Do any carry a maker's name?

No name runs across the category. Where a name appears in a title it comes from a single listing, so there's no house or firm to look for under this heading.

What the titles do carry, repeatedly, is the assay office and year rather than a maker.

How often do these come up for sale?

Rarely. Only around three a year come to market on Sellingantiques.

Yet 21 different dealers have listed one, which tells you it's a category almost nobody stocks twice.
