Introduction

Antique Signet Rings

The form descends from the personal seal worn on the finger, the cut bezel pressed into wax to authenticate a document. By the 19th century that job was ceremonial, and the ring survived as a monogram, crest or hardstone piece worn chiefly on the little finger.

On Sellingantiques the category is overwhelmingly British gold: 106 of 127 titles say gold, with 9ct in 50 and 18ct in 34. The bezel is plain or blank, cut with initials or a family crest, or set with a dark stone, onyx in 11 titles alongside bloodstone, agate, sardonyx and carnelian.

The everyday piece is a 20th-century hallmarked gold signet with an oval or shield top, and the dated field clusters in the 1960s, 1930s, 1950s and 1920s. Titles often carry a ring size and an assay city with a year, so a listing reads something like 9ct gold signet ring, Birmingham 1966, size S.

A minority under the heading are not signets in the strict sense. Diamond and gem-set dress rings account for 24 titles, with gypsy, belcher, buckle and snake rings among them, plus cameo rings and a small group of excavated bronze and silver rings dated before 1700, engraved with a bear, a warrior, a ship, waves and a Tudor fleur-de-lis.

What sets them apart

Where The Range Splits

Metal does most of the sorting. The 9ct rings sit mostly in the lower half of the range, while 18ct and 15ct pieces cluster higher, and the highest-priced examples in the archive are 18ct or 14ct white gold. Weight works the same way: dealers volunteer grammes and the word heavy only when the figure flatters, and the heaviest stated anywhere is 9.1 grammes on an Art Deco 18ct diamond signet.

Then what sits on the bezel. Named gems push a ring up, diamond above all, and those 24 diamond titles are concentrated at the top. Cut work counts too, with Georgian carnelian and agate intaglios of Zeus, an allegorical figure and a gentleman's profile, and family-crest and monogram seal rings, all sitting nearer the upper end than a blank or plain top does.

Documentation is the quieter axis. A title carrying the full hallmark, Birmingham 1923, London 1967, Chester 1913, tells you the decade outright, and pieces that give only vintage or a circa sit below them. Era tags are not always consistent with the wording, so the title text and the hallmark year are the firmer guide.

The Antique Signet Rings Glossary

9ct / 18ct / 15ct / 14ct
Gold fineness in carats out of 24. 9ct and 18ct dominate the archive, with 15ct on a few Victorian and Edwardian pieces.
Bezel
The flat engraving surface, also called the top or face. Titles name it oval, shield, square, round, rectangular, octagonal or hexagonal, the last two turning up only once or twice.
Blank
A signet whose bezel was never engraved, as in Edwardian Blank 18ct Gold Signet Ring. Plain wording does the same work.
Hallmark and assay city
The struck marks giving fineness and year. Birmingham is named most often, in 9 titles, with London and Chester behind it.
Intaglio
A design cut down into the stone, so it prints in relief when sealed. It appears in 8 titles, in carnelian, agate and amethyst.
Gypsy setting
A stone sunk flush into the metal of the shank, seen in the gypsy and belcher rings filed under this heading.
Questions people ask

Antique Signet Rings: Frequently Asked Questions

Are most signet rings actually antique?

Not by the strictest reading. The 1960s is the single best-represented decade in the archive at 17 listings, and the 1930s, 1950s and 1920s follow close behind.

Older pieces are there. Victorian appears as a named era on 16 listings, Edwardian on 9, and seven sit in a before-1700 bucket.

Which gold fineness turns up most often?

9ct, in 50 of the 127 titles, with 18ct next at 34. Together they account for the bulk of the gold pieces.

15ct and 14ct appear as well, 15ct on some Victorian and Edwardian rings and 14ct white gold at the top of the range.

What stones were used in signet bezels?

Dark chalcedony dominates. Onyx is in 11 titles, with bloodstone in 5, plus agate, sardonyx and carnelian.

Jasper, hematite, lapis lazuli and amethyst also appear, along with one-offs like a hematite Roman centurion head and an onyx Cancer zodiac ring.

Do listings give the ring size?

Often. Stated sizes appear in 18 titles, running from K½ up to W in UK letter sizing, with half sizes common.

Rings described as men's cluster at the large end of that spread.

How old are the earliest rings in this category?

Seven listings fall before 1700: medieval bronze rings engraved with a star, a bear, a warrior, a shield and cross, a ship and waves, a Tudor fleur-de-lis, and a Roman silver ring set with a jasper Capricorn intaglio.

The earliest firmly dated gold piece is a Georgian hardstone intaglio inscribed with the year 1811, with two further Georgian intaglios placed around 1780 to 1830.

Are signet rings marked with a maker's name?

Not in this archive. The listings carry fineness marks, assay cities and years rather than named makers or retailers.

What does get recorded is origin at the edges: a Scottish-marked example and two French-made crest rings are the rarest origins in the samples.
