Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

This Victorian epergne stands on a wooden side table against a brick wall, combining a cast white metal base and an opaque glass trumpet vase. The white metal base depicts the Aesop fable of the fox and grapes in high relief, while the frosted glass horn rises above with a flared and ruffled rim in shades of white. The glass body is free from chips or cracks, and the entire assembly rests firmly on a stable foot. Measuring 32 cm high by 13.5 cm wide and 13.5 cm deep, the object sits compactly on flat surfaces. Placed in a modern interior, the piece functions well as a dining table centrepiece or on a sideboard cabinet to display floral arrangements or stand alone as a decorative accent.

FAQs

An epergne is a decorative table centrepiece popular during the Victorian period, designed to hold flowers, fruit, or sweetmeats during formal dining. Single-trumpet varieties featured a central removable glass horn supported by an ornate metal base.

Victorian epergnes were predominantly crafted using blown or molded glasssuch as frosted, opalescent, or cranberry glasssupported by cast white metal, pewter, or electroplated nickel silver bases featuring relief motifs.

Authentic period pieces display detailed casting features, hand-formed glass trumpets with hand-finished edges, and age-consistent oxidisation or patina on the metal base rather than uniform modern plating.

Place the epergne centrally on a dining table or sideboard top to serve as a focal point, displaying botanical stems or remaining unadorned to showcase the relief metalwork.

Wash the glass trumpet separately in lukewarm water with mild detergent, and gently wipe the metal base using a dry microfiber cloth to clean without stripping original patina.
