Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A tantalus is a wooden cabinet or open frame containing glass decanters, constructed with a locking top mechanism that prevents the stoppers from being removed while leaving the liquid visible. Popularised in late 19th-century Britain, the name derives from the Greek mythological figure Tantalus, referencing the inability to access the drink inside.

Victorian tantalus frames were typically crafted from timber such as burr walnut, oak, or mahogany, embellished with nickel or silver-plated metal mountings. The set features heavy lead cut-glass or crystal decanters with fitted stoppers, often accompanied by silver-plated liquor labels.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut glass decanters with hand-ground stoppers that often display etched matching numbers corresponding to their decanter neck. Look for functioning period lock mechanisms, silver or nickel mounts with maker stampings, and original patina across high-figured timber veneers.

A Victorian tantalus serves as a decorative focal point when positioned on a dark wood sideboard, a home bar cart, or an office desk. Combine it with contemporary barware accessories or warm ambient lighting to highlight the cut-glass surfaces and polished wood grain.

Wash crystal decanters manually using lukewarm water and mild detergent, drying completely before re-inserting stoppers to prevent glass clouding. Dust the timber frame with a soft microfibre cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish occasionally to preserve the burr wood finish.
