A Fine and Finely Painted Underglaze Blue and Copper-red 'Mythical Beasts' Garlic-mouth Vase Late Qing to Early Republic Period

19th century
Description

A Fine and Finely Painted Underglaze Blue and Copper-Red 'Mythical Beasts' Garlic-Mouth Vase Late Qing to Early Republic Period

This exceptional pear-shaped porcelain vase is potted with a slender, gracefully tapering neck opening into a neatly flared garlic-bulb mouth and standing upon a finely finished, neatly pared foot rim. The bright, clear white porcelain body serves as a pristine ground for a continuous, spirited frieze meticulously painted in vibrant underglaze cobalt blue and soft copper-red.

The composition depicts a procession of legendary and auspicious creatures drawn from Chinese folklore, masterfully executed with fine linework, detailed fur hatching, and organic stippling:

Tigers: Rendered with fierce, dynamic expressions, featuring sweeping cobalt-blue contours and rich copper-red striped coats that display natural kiln-reddening and subtle pooling.

Qilin / Mythical Beasts: Depicted in mid-stride with elaborate manes, tails, and scaled bodies, showcasing the technical challenge of combining underglaze blue and copper-red pigments.

Spotted Stags / Deer: Gracefully integrated with fine-spotted white detailing against copper-red bodies and slender legs, symbolizing longevity and prosperity.

Base, Foot Rim, and Markings

Foot Rim: Clean, neatly turned, and finely pared, showing a fine-grained, well-compacted white porcelain body typical of high-grade traditional revival kilns.

Base & Markings: The base features character marks / reign marks, alongside collection and inventory stickers affixed directly to the underside.

Height: 29 cm

Condition: Very good overall condition, exhibiting crisp pigment separation, bright translucent glaze, and brilliant artistic control throughout.

Provenance: Private New York Collection

The G S. May Esquire Private Collection. London

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A garlic-mouth vase features a bulbous neck resembling a garlic head, decorated with cobalt blue and copper oxide pigments applied beneath a transparent glaze prior to high-temperature firing.

High-fired porcelain clay is painted with copper oxide and cobalt pigments, then sealed under a clear glaze; copper oxide requires precise kiln atmosphere control to achieve proper red colouration without turning green or grey.

Period pieces typically display characteristic foot rim wear, precise brushwork in underglaze pigments, and glaze properties such as slight contraction spots or subtle orange-peel texture consistent with late 19th and early 20th-century kiln production.

Position the vessel as a focal point on a sideboard, console table, or open shelving unit alongside natural wood finishes or minimalistic decor to highlight its form and painted details.

Dust gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or natural bristle brush, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners, immersion in water, or exposure to sudden thermal changes.
