George III Mahogany Standing Corner Cupboard

18th century
Description

DESCRIPTION

A handsome George III mahogany standing corner cupboard dating from the late eighteenth century, retaining its elegant swan-neck pediment and attractive figured mahogany throughout.

Constructed in one section, the cupboard is surmounted by a moulded swan-neck pediment with central brass finial above a single panelled door enclosed by canted corners. The interior retains its shaped green-painted corner shelves, offering useful display or storage space.

The lower section is enclosed by a large blind panel and stands on shaped bracket feet. The door and lower panel display particularly attractive bookmatched flame mahogany veneers, while the restrained proportions make it equally suitable for both period and contemporary interiors.

Although altered during its life, the cupboard remains an attractive and practical eighteenth-century piece with plenty of character.

DIMENSIONS

Height: 193 cm

Width: 91 cm

Depth: 54 cm

CONDITION

Presented in good antique condition consistent with its age of over 200 years. There are the usual marks, knocks, scratches, small cracks and signs of age-related wear expected from a useful period piece. The cupboard has been adapted historically. The base section is enclosed (no door) and accessed by removing a hatch in the lowest interior shelf, revealing a useful storage void beneath. The interior retains its shaped painted shelves in the upper section, and the cupboard remains structurally sound and ready for use.

As with all antique and vintage furniture, this piece has been used and enjoyed over many years and should be expected to show signs of age and use. We aim to describe any significant faults, repairs or alterations as accurately and honestly as possible. The photographs form an important part of the description and should be viewed alongside the written condition report. If you would like further information or additional photographs, we are always happy to help before purchase.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

George III corner cupboards produced in Britain during the mid-to-late 18th century typically feature dense mahogany timber, classical architectural mouldings, fielded panel doors, and swan-neck pediments.

These cabinets were constructed using solid mahogany and mahogany veneers, supported by secondary timbers such as pine or oak for interior framing and backboards, along with cast brass hardware.

Authentic period examples demonstrate hand-sawn backboards, hand-cut dovetail joints on interior drawer elements, natural wood shrinkage along panel lines, and original brass fittings exhibiting age-appropriate oxidisation.

An antique standing corner cabinet can be placed in dining rooms, hallways, or living areas to utilise unassigned corner space, balancing rich timber tones against neutral wall palettes or modern plaster finishes.

Dust the cabinet surfaces regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, ensuring placement remains away from direct heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage.
