An epergne is a decorative table centrepiece that originated in the eighteenth century to hold fruits, sweetmeats, or floral arrangements. During the nineteenth century, glass epergnes featuring removable trumpet-shaped vases became central features on dining tables during formal meals.

Uranium glass, often referred to as vaseline glass, is produced by adding small quantities of uranium oxide to the molten glass mixture before shaping. This chemical compound imparts a distinctive translucent yellow or green colour and causes the glass to fluoresce bright green under ultraviolet light.
