This Victorian French hand-blown uranium glass epergne consists of three distinct trumpet-shaped vases and a round bowl base in light green opalescent glass. The decorative design incorporates crimped ruffled rims on both the bowl base and the central trumpet, alongside applied glass trailing on the smaller vases and a turned brass connector linking the central shaft to the tray. The delicate glass components exhibit luminous properties under specific lighting conditions. Measuring 39 cm high and 36 cm wide, this item stands on a scalloped tray base that supports the upward-reaching holders. Ideal as a decorative dining table centrepiece in a traditional interior, the epergne functions well for displaying small floral arrangements or standing alone as a glass display object.

An epergne is a decorative table centrepiece that originated in the eighteenth century to hold fruits, sweetmeats, or floral arrangements. During the nineteenth century, glass epergnes featuring removable trumpet-shaped vases became central features on dining tables during formal meals.

Uranium glass, often referred to as vaseline glass, is produced by adding small quantities of uranium oxide to the molten glass mixture before shaping. This chemical compound imparts a distinctive translucent yellow or green colour and causes the glass to fluoresce bright green under ultraviolet light.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces display hand-blown characteristics such as pontil marks, minor air bubbles, and slight variations in symmetry. Additionally, genuine uranium glass will strongly glow under a blacklight due to the chemical presence of uranium compounds in the material.

Position a glass epergne on a dining table, sideboard, or mantelpiece where natural light highlights the opalescent frills and translucent tones. The individual glass trumpets can be dressed with single flower stems or left unadorned as sculptural art glass.

Clean hand-blown glass gently using lukewarm water and a mild detergent, avoiding harsh abrasive chemicals or dishwashers. Metal mounts and brass collars should be wiped dry immediately to prevent corrosion, tarnish, or water staining.
