Superior London Drop Dial Fusee Georgian Wall Clock
£2,750 $3,680 €3,208
Clockwise is delighted to present for your consideration a stunning London drop-dial fusee wall clock from the famous and important maker James Murray of Royal Exchange London. Clocks of this quality don''t come along often and this would make an ideal addition, or start, to a curated collection.
The recently overhauled and cleaned eight day duration fusee timepiece movement has an anchor recoil escapement and benefits from my three year warranty. This impressive clock comes complete with its original pendulum.
The twelve inch painted dial is in lovely condition and adorned with the maker''s details ''James Murray, Royal Exchange, London''. Cleaned to a high standard the dial is complimented by original hands beneath the original cast brass bezel and convex glass.
The case is of pleasing proportions being a standard two-piece design with the narrow surround, typical of the period, attaching to the back box via four wooden pegs. Adorned with grape ears the flame mahogany venee...red trunk has boxwood inlay to the pendulum viewing window area and the lower curved area houses the pendulum adjustment door which opens courtesy of a silk pull. The viewing window with brass frame completes the stunning appearance. There is an access door to the right flank of the clock.
Born in Scotland in 1780, James Murray established his business at the Royal Exchange, London, in 1815. Regarded as one of the foremost makers of watches, clocks, and marine chronometers of his generation, Murray earned widespread recognition for the exceptional precision of his work. His reputation was firmly established in 1823 when one of his marine chronometers won the highest award at the prestigious Greenwich Chronometer Trials. Murray’s chronometers were subsequently entrusted to some of the leading voyages of exploration of the early nineteenth century, including those of Sir William Edward Parry and James Weddell. A Murray chronometer accompanied Weddell on his celebrated 1823 expedition, during which he reached the furthest southern latitude attained by any vessel at that time. Today, instruments bearing the Murray signature are prized by collectors for their rarity, technical excellence, and association with the great age of maritime exploration.
