Large 19th Century Antique English Decalcomania Glass Vase

In superb original condition, this large 19th century antique decalcomania glass vase is decorated with decoupage on the inside of the vase. Beautifully done, very decorative, decalcomania vases are much rare than the balls, even though they are rare too. This is a lovely large example that has a goo pontil mark to the underside. English and dating to around 1870.

Decalcomania, also known as potichomania in the 19th century, is a decorative technique where paper cutouts or transfers were applied to the interior of clear glass vessels and sealed with background paint to imitate porcelain.

These vessels were crafted using blown clear glass, decorated internally with hand-coloured paper prints or lithographs, and lined with paint or potichomania paste to secure the imagery.

Authentic 19th-century examples display internal paper transfers visible through blown glass, often showing slight age-related craquelure or paint separation on the interior surface.
