Antique French Louis Xv Kingwood & Floral Marquetry Petite Commode, Circa 1890

19th century
Description

A French Louis XV style kingwood and floral marquetry petite commode, dating from the late 19th century, circa 1890.

The quarter-veneered and crossbanded top is enclosed by a pierced brass gallery and centred with a floral marquetry panel. Below are three long drawers, each decorated with further floral marquetry and opening by key. The commode retains its original key.

Raised on elegant cabriole legs, the commode displays the graceful proportions and decorative qualities associated with the Louis XV style.

The drawers are fitted with Vachette Frères locks. Founded in 1864 in Troyes and renamed Vachette Frères in 1865, the firm became one of France’s leading lock manufacturers during the late 19th century. Their locks are commonly found on quality French furniture of the Belle Époque period (1871–1914).

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in 18th-century France, Louis XV style furniture is recognised for its asymmetrical Rococo curves, delicate cabriole legs, fluid silhouettes, and decorative embellishments such as floral marquetry and polished brass mounts.

Cabinetmakers frequently utilised exotic timber veneers such as kingwood, tulipwood, and rosewood for intricate marquetry, alongside cast brass or ormolu handles and pierced top galleries.

Authentic 19th-century revival pieces display hand-cut joinery, finely executed quarter-veneered panels, genuine inlaid marquetry, and cast metal fittings showing subtle, natural oxidisation over time.

A petite commode functions effectively as a bedside table, an accent chest in a narrow hallway beneath a wall mirror, or an occasional side table beside contemporary seating.

Maintain the surface by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying beeswax polish sparingly, while keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and humid environments to protect the veneer.
