This nineteenth-century Victorian English bookcase is constructed from pollard oak with a warm brown timber finish and patination, built in a two-part format. The upper section comprises glazed doors with applied circular bosses and a moulded cornice, enclosing internal shelves. The lower section features panelled cupboard doors decorated with matching applied roundels, standing on a plinth base. Measuring 222 cm high, 102 cm wide, and 54 cm deep, the two-part construction allows for practical positioning. In a contemporary home, this piece suits a gentleman's library, study, or living room for displaying books and storing items behind the glazed doors and lower cupboards. The warm brown timber tone and figured grain bring traditional character to an interior, while the vertical proportions make efficient use of wall space.

Dust the wood surface regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish periodically to preserve the timber finish, ensuring the cabinet is positioned away from direct heat sources and excessive humidity.

Position the cabinet as a central focal piece against neutral walls, utilizing the glazed upper shelves to display curated ceramics, art books, or glassware alongside traditional volumes.

Authentic pieces exhibit dense, natural figure variance across the grain, historical brass lock escutcheons, hand-planed timber undersides, and evidence of traditional mortise and tenon joinery rather than modern uniform fasteners.

These bookcases typically feature two-part construction for transportation, using solid oak framing, hand-cut dovetail joints, glass panes, and turned circular boss mouldings applied to panelled cabinet doors.

A 19th-century pollard oak bookcase is a cabinet crafted from oak timber harvested from trees subjected to pollarding, a historical pruning technique that causes dense, distinctive swirl-grained growth patterns across the timber.
