Large Continental Oak & Walnut Armoire

19th century
For Sale by LTANTIQUES.CO.UK
Description

An impressive and substantial Continental oak and walnut armoire of exceptional presence, featuring a beautifully figured exterior with elegant scalloped double doors and a shaped cornice.

The doors retain their original working key and open to a spacious interior fitted with four removable shelves.

Constructed in five main sections plus two pinned doors, the piece can be dismantled for transportation and is almost flat-pack in nature, making it far easier to move than its size suggests.

The raised panel sides and moulded plinth base further enhance its quality and craftsmanship.

The interior shelves can be removed and a hanging rail fitted if desired, allowing the piece to serve equally well as a wardrobe or storage cupboard.

Presented in very good condition throughout, with a rich warm colour and attractive figuring to the timber.

A striking and highly practical piece of furniture, offering excellent storage and considerable decorative appeal.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Continental armoire is a large, freestanding wooden storage cabinet, historically crafted across mainland Europe during the 17th to 19th centuries for storing clothing, linens, and household valuables.

These cabinets typically feature primary hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or fruitwood, constructed using hand-cut dovetail joints, mortise and tenon framing, and raised panel doors held together with wooden dowels.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-planed backboards, hand-forged iron or brass hardware, irregular saw marks on structural timbers, and natural wear patterns consistent with age around handles and keyholes.

A large armoire functions as a focal piece in a bedroom, dining room, or hallway, offering concealed storage for clothing, tableware, or media equipment while adding architectural scale to neutral interiors.

Regular dusting with a soft cotton cloth and an annual application of natural beeswax polish preserves the wood patina, whilst maintaining stable ambient humidity prevents timber warping or splitting.
