Chinese Yixing Reticulated 19th Century Pair of Pottery Vases.

1900 - 1920
Description

This large and boldly decorated late 19th century Chinese red pottery Yixing pair of vases is in perfect condition. They stand on a plain, straight foot and have a bulbous lower section which gradually tapers to their rims. These fine examples have been decorated by hand in the wet clay before firing. This process is to carve and pierce the wonderfully detailed design of exotic flowers and foliage. This is highly skilled work as it can be very problematic due to the possibility of collapse, particularly when cutting the reticulated piercing work through the wet clay. The carving is exceptionally deep and bold and very pleasing to the eye. Both vases have an impressed character mark on their bases. There are slight differences in their width and depth, as these vases are completely handmade. Circa 1900

Dealers Notes

Robert Belcher Antiques was established in 1984 and is a high-quality retailer of interesting, rare antiques and decorative objects. After forty years of shop keeping and maintaining beautiful showrooms, which have been regularly open six days a week, Robert and Wendy have now taken a slightly different approach to their business. Having sold their retail premises, the antique business is now fully online. The picture framing service has ceased to operate because of moving online.

You can contact Robert and Wendy by email or telephone to discuss items from their extensive catalogue of attractive pieces and make purchases. Customers can rest assured that the long-established dealership is continuing to run in an exceedingly professional way, selling genuine and high-quality items which are guaranteed to please the most discerning collector, decorator or homeowner.

All items will be personally hand packaged to a high standard. Small items are extensively wrapped using the best materials and are often double boxed. Items are then shipped with DHL or Royal Mail fully insured and often with next day delivery. Larger items would be personally delivered or sent with a specialist antique delivery firm, or for outside the U.K, a professional shipping company.

Please enjoy viewing their collection of rare and interesting pieces and have the assurance that Robert and Wendy will do their utmost to make sure your experience is exceptional, as has been recognised by many customers who have bought with confidence regularly over the years.

This pair of late 19th century Chinese Yixing pottery vases originates from the Qing Dynasty. Made from terracotta red zisha clay earthenware, they stand on a plain, straight foot with a bulbous lower section that tapers toward the top rim. The objects display a double-walled structure featuring hand-carved reticulated openwork depicting dense exotic floral and foliage motifs across their bodies, complemented by an incised scroll border around the narrow neck. Both terracotta red vessels have an impressed character mark located on their bases. Measuring 25.5 cm high by 16 cm wide and 16 cm deep, these handmade pieces are suited for display in a gentleman's library or upon a sideboard top within a domestic interior. The rich terracotta red tone and intricate openwork carving provide a traditional aesthetic, allowing them to function as decorative display items in living spaces or studies.

Yixing reticulated pottery refers to Chinese earthenware produced in Yixing, Jiangsu province, featuring intricate openwork or pierced outer walls. This double-walled technique emerged prominently during the Qing dynasty, showcasing advanced ceramic carving.

Yixing pottery is crafted from unique local Zisha clay stoneware, known for its high iron content, plasticity, and fine texture. The reticulated pattern is achieved by carefully hand-carving openwork details into the outer layer prior to firing.

Authentic 19th-century Yixing pieces display hand-carved reticulation, unglazed clay surfaces, and age-appropriate firing characteristics. Stamped maker marks or impressed seals are often present on the underside.

Position this pair on a mantelpiece or sideboard where ambient light highlights the pierced floral detail. The warm terracotta hue contrasts effectively against dark timber, neutral linen, or stone surfaces.

Dust the delicate carved openings using a soft, dry brush or compressed air. Avoid submerging in water or using harsh chemical cleaners, as unglazed porous stoneware can absorb liquids.
