A Regency lead crystal bucket rummer showcases English craftsmanship from the Georgian period. The clear glass vessel displays a wide upper band of hobnail diamond facets, a lower band of vertical slice cutting around the bucket-shaped bowl, and a rounded knop on the stem with detailed porthole cutting. The circular foot features a multipoint star-cut underside radiating outwards, while the upper rim remains plain and polished. The object stands 14 cm high, 9 cm wide, and 9 cm deep. This piece serves as a functional item for serving beer, wine, or spirits, fitting neatly upon a sideboard top or dining table in a traditional interior setting.

FAQs

Rummers originated in late 18th-century Britain as sturdy, wide-bowled drinking vessels designed for rum punch, ale, and wine. During the Georgian and Regency eras, advancements in lead crystal cutting techniques led to ornate decorative motifs such as hobnail and panel cutting.

Regency glassware was predominantly crafted from heavy lead crystal glass, which provided high clarity and refractive qualities suitable for deep hand-cutting. The vessels were free-blown or mouth-blown before undergoing diamond-wheel cutting.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit notable weight due to high lead content, subtle hand-cutting irregularities, and a ground pontil mark or star-cut design on the base. Additionally, light base wear and a slight greyish tint are common age indicators.

Antique rummers function as decorative accents when displayed on a sideboard tray, open kitchen shelving, or illuminated inside a glazed cabinet. Placing cut glass vessels near natural light sources highlights the facet cutting.

Hand wash antique glassware in lukewarm, soapy water using a mild liquid detergent and a soft cloth, avoiding extreme temperature shifts that cause thermal shock. Never clean lead crystal in a dishwasher, as high heat and abrasive detergents dull the surface clarity.
