Antique Exhibition Quality Carved Mahogany Nine Tube Chiming Longcase Clock

19th century
Description

An exceptional exhibition quality carved mahogany longcase clock of impressive scale and presence, richly decorated throughout with bold scrolling foliage, latticework panels and finely executed carving. The case is of outstanding craftsmanship designed to showcase both the artistry of the cabinet maker and the sophistication of the movement within.

The beautifully detailed dial features a silvered chapter ring with gilt engraved centre, subsidiary seconds dial and chime selection, surmounted by a rolling moonphase in the arch. The movement is of particularly high quality striking and chiming on a full set of nine tubular bells offering both Westminster and Whittington chimes. The sound produced is deep and resonant far richer than standard bell striking clocks.

Fitted with a mercury pendulum the clock was designed for greater accuracy, compensating for temperature changes and reflecting the technical advancements of the late 19th century. The pierced trunk door reveals the full arrangement of tubes and pendulum enhanced by decorative fretted panels and rich colouring behind.

Clocks of this calibre were produced as statement pieces often referred to as exhibition clocks, intended to demonstrate the highest standards of horology and cabinet making. The combination of elaborate carving, multiple chime options and advanced movement places this example firmly at the top end of production.

Condition / Servicing Note:

Please note that antique clocks are complex and sensitive mechanical objects. While some clocks may be running at the time of listing we cannot guarantee ongoing performance without a full inspection and testing period by our specialist horologist. Where inspection, testing, or servicing is required this process can take between 2–12 weeks depending on the clock, the work needed, and current workload. This careful approach helps ensure the clock is properly assessed rather than rushed.

Clock Warranty

All clocks purchased from London City Antiques are supplied with a 12-month warranty from the date of purchase.

This warranty covers mechanical faults and failures arising from normal use. It does not extend to damage resulting from improper handling, unauthorised tampering, accidental or physical damage, environmental factors (including humidity, temperature fluctuations, or exposure to direct sunlight), or misuse.

Should a clock develop a genuine fault within the warranty period that meets the above conditions, we will, at our discretion and at no cost to you, arrange for the repair or replacement of any defective parts. All remedial work will be carried out by a fully qualified and experienced horologist.

In the unlikely event that a fault cannot be satisfactorily resolved, a full refund will be offered.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A tubular chime longcase clock is a tall floor-standing timepiece that uses hung metal tubes rather than traditional bells or gongs to produce acoustic chimes on the quarter-hour and hour.

The exterior cabinetry is typically constructed from solid mahogany or oak with flame veneers, while the movement consists of brass plates, steel arbors, cast iron or lead weights, and polished brass dial plates.

Authentic pieces from this period display hand-carved relief ornamentation, heavy cast brass dial spandrels, engraved silvered dials, and weight-driven movements with multi-tubular chiming mechanisms.

Place the clock as a focal architectural anchor in an entrance hallway, stair landing, or formal reception room, allowing clear vertical clearance and pairing it with minimalist architectural mouldings.

The case should be positioned on a perfectly level floor to ensure free pendulum movement, while the mechanical movement requires professional horological oiling every five to seven years.
