This Regency bracket clock dates from 1800 and is made from dark brown rosewood with mother-of-pearl floral inlay. The case has a carved arch pediment at the top, a circular white dial framed by a brass bezel, Roman numerals, and the original hands. Twin winding holes sit on the dial face, which is signed by Seller of Reading. The timber case stands on reeded bun feet and includes decorative inlay in the corners of the main body and the lower plinth, alongside a small winding key shown laid on the surface nearby. Measuring 49 cm high, 33 cm wide, and 20 cm deep, the clock sits on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or desk in a living room, hallway, or study. It serves as a working timekeeper and a decorative wooden mantel clock in a traditional British home interior.

Originating in late 17th-century England, bracket clocks were portable spring-driven timepieces originally mounted on matching wall brackets. During the Regency period, these clocks evolved into prominent mantel and tabletop features, characteristically housed in dark exotic timber cases such as rosewood and mahogany, featuring intricate inlay and classical architecture.

Regency bracket clocks were predominantly crafted from high-grade rosewood or mahogany veneers applied over oak carcasses. Decorative elements typically incorporated brass strung inlay, mother-of-pearl motifs, engraved brass or painted enamel dials, cast brass bezels, and brass fusee movements.

Authentic Regency clocks feature period-appropriate construction, such as hand-cut joints, cast brass bezels with convex glass, and brass fusee movements. The presence of regional maker signatures on the dial or movement backplate, alongside age-consistent wear to the timber finish, further corroborates authenticity.

A Regency bracket clock serves as a structural focal point when placed atop a stone mantelpiece, dark wood console table, or structured bookshelf. Positioning the timepiece alongside minimalist ceramics or modern framed artwork creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and contemporary design.

Keep the timber case away from direct sunlight, central heating radiators, and humid environments to prevent veneer lifting or wood movement. Dust regularly with a soft microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to preserve the protective finish.
