This Victorian claret jug dates to 1880 in the English Country House style, constructed from clear cut glass and silver-plate. The piece has a tapering conical body with a deep shaped diamond pattern, topped by a hinged silver-plated lid with an ornate finial and a scrolled handle. The silver-plate mount is finely engraved with floral and foliate scrollwork, alongside a central cartouche bearing a phoenix crest on one side and initials on the other. Visible details include a smooth-functioning hinge, minor scuffs consistent with age, and a gentle patina on the silver-plated mount. The jug stands 30.5 cm high and 10 cm wide. In a contemporary home, this vessel sits neatly on a sideboard top, serving as a functional water or wine pitcher during dining or as an decorative glassware display piece in a living space or dining room. The clear glass pairs easily with various table settings, while the metallic mount brings a bright silver accent to traditional and eclectic interiors alike.

A claret jug is a specialised glassware vessel designed during the nineteenth century primarily for serving red wines from the Bordeaux region of France, traditionally referred to as claret in Britain.

Victorian claret jugs typically combine heavy cut or blown lead crystal bodies with silver or electroplated nickel silver mounts, hinged lids, handles, and spouts.

Authentic pieces usually exhibit hand-cut glass patterns, makers marks or silver-plate stamps on the metal mount, and period-appropriate features like scroll handles or engraved classical motifs.

These vessels can be displayed on a sideboard, drinks trolley, or dining table as a functional wine decanter or a standalone decorative accent.

Hand wash the glass interior with warm water and mild detergent, avoiding harsh abrasives, and gently polish the silver-plated mount with a soft cloth and specialized silver polish.
