Bohemian glassmaking gained international prominence during the 19th century, particularly with the development of flashed and stained glass techniques. Craftsmen applied a thin coating of ruby-coloured glass or copper stain over clear glass, which was subsequently engraved using copper wheels to create contrasting clear decorative scenes.

These pieces were produced by gathering clear glass and applying a thin outer layer of red glass or metallic chemical stain. Once cooled, lapidary artisans used rotating stone or copper wheels to cut through the red layer, revealing the transparent glass beneath to form detailed patterns.

Authentic pieces exhibit precise wheel-cut detailing rather than acid-etched or pressed designs, resulting in sharp, defined edges along the engraved areas. Weight, slight hand-blown variations, and smooth wear on the base unmarred by artificial distressing also indicate period origin.

Position glass vessels where natural or directional artificial light can pass through them, such as on a window sill, mantelpiece, or glass-shelved cabinet. Pairing rich red glass with dark timber or polished brass enhances the depth of the colour contrast.
