This Georgian silver salt cellars London 1821 John Wakefield item stands as an antique sterling silver and silver-gilt piece exhibiting a gleaming silver exterior and a rich gold-coloured interior. The round open salt cellar displays a heavily embossed floral rim border, a lobed and fluted body, and four cast scrolled feet supporting the container. A delicate family crest is engraved to one side of the body, complementing the crisp hallmarking on the base. The reflective metallic surface reveals minor historical wear consistent with an antique object of this pedigree. Measuring 5.5 cm in height and 8 cm in diameter, this compact vessel provides practical storage while serving as a decorative display object. Placed upon a sideboard top within an English country house interior, the salt cellar functions well as a classic accessory for traditional home styling.

FAQs

A Georgian silver salt cellar is a small open vessel crafted in Great Britain during the Georgian era, designed to hold table salt prior to the invention of modern free-flowing salt shakers.

These vessels were wrought from sterling silver, featuring hand-chased or embossed ornamentation, cast scroll feet, and a silver-gilt interior layer applied to protect the sterling silver from salt corrosion.

Authentic Georgian silver bears official British hallmarking, which typically includes a makers mark, a lion passant mark for sterling quality, a town mark, a date letter, and a monarchs duty mark.

In contemporary interiors, an open silver salt cellar can be repurposed on a sideboard as a ring tray, placed on a vanity for small jewellery, or used on a dining table to serve gourmet finishing salts.

Silverware should be cleaned using a soft cloth and a gentle silver polish, avoiding abrasive pads or harsh chemicals that could strip or damage the delicate interior gold plating.
