This Victorian pair of sterling silver salt cellars comes complete with matching spoons, red glass liners, and a fitted presentation case lined with purple velvet. The circular salt cellars display detailed relief panels depicting Hindu deities around the exterior, resting on small spherical feet, while the accompanying spoons feature twisted handles terminating in small figural finials. The case itself has a dark exterior and a gathered pink silk lining inside the hinged lid. This complete table set measures 5 cm by 2.5 cm for each salt cellar, with matching London hallmarks dating the silver to 1886 and 1888 alongside the silversmith marks for Cornelius Saunders and James Frank Shepherd. Placed upon a sideboard top or a display cabinet in a home today, this collection brings period craftsmanship into domestic settings as a decorative accent. The matching pieces sit securely within their velvet-lined slots, offering a complete presentation suitable for display alongside other antique silver items. The cranberry glass liners insert smoothly into the pierced silver bodies, creating a contrast of colour between the silver relief panels and the rich red glass within. The interior purple velvet provides a soft bed for the arrangement when open, whilst the dark outer case keeps the set protected when closed.

During the late nineteenth century, British silversmiths frequently incorporated Indian design motifs, such as repousse figures of Hindu deities, catering to the popularity of Eastern arts across the British Empire.

These sets typically feature sterling silver frames, hand-blown or pressed coloured glass liners to protect the metal from salt corrosion, and silk or velvet-lined wooden presentation cases.

Authentic British sterling silver from this era bears official assay hallmarks, including the lion passant mark, a town mark, a date letter, and a registered makers mark stamped into the metal surface.

Cased silver salt sets serve as elegant decorative accents on a formal dining sideboard, glass display cabinet, or dressing table for holding small jewellery items.

Clean the glass liners separately in warm soapy water, and gently polish the silver frame with a specialized silver polishing cloth, avoiding submersing the presentation case or using abrasive chemicals.
