Description

A substantial late-19th-century Shiwan figure-vase formed as an overfilled treasure sack with a tall, tightly drawn neck. Set into a recessed niche at the front sits the laughing Hotei (Budai), god of abundance, his rounded form and relaxed posture rendered with assured modelling. The thick yellow lead glaze has developed an even antique craquelure with naturally darkened lines, characteristic of genuine period Shiwan production. The unglazed base shows expected firing marks.

Active since the Ming dynasty and flourishing into the late Qing era, Shiwan production is famous for its heavy stoneware body, expressive figurative sculpting, and vibrant monochrome or flambe glazes.

Shiwan ceramics utilize a dense, dark stoneware clay body sourced from local riverbed deposits. Glazes are typically thick and opaque, formulated with wood ash and mineral oxides to achieve rich monochrome colours such as mustard yellow, celadon green, cobalt blue, and sang-de-boeuf red.
