Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Late 19th-century Victorian mantel clocks often featured dark, stained, or ebonised timber and slate cases adorned with carved scrollwork, acanthus leaves, or architectural moldings. These timepieces typically incorporated white enamel dials with Roman numerals and spring-driven mechanical movements.

Constructors utilised dense hardwoods such as oak or mahogany finished with black ebonising lacquers, as well as black Belgian slate and marble. Internal movements were machined from brass and steel, while dials were executed in fired enamel over copper plates.

Authentic pieces feature heavy cast brass clockworks, hand-assembled movement plates, and period-correct markings or engraved presentation plaques. Wear to the winding arbors, original hand-cut screws, and naturally aged brass bezels distinguish original items from modern reproductions.

Place the clock centrally on a stone fireplace mantelpiece, bookshelf, or sideboard alongside minimalist ceramics to create visual contrast. The dark casing pairs effectively against lighter paint palettes or exposed brickwork.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth, avoiding liquid solvents or harsh chemicals that strip original finishes. Keep internal brass mechanical movements running smoothly by having a professional horologist clean and oil them every five to seven years.
