Description

This is a Georgian, mouth-blown, diamond-moulded, Bristol blue coloured glass cream jug dating from the turn of the 18th/19th centuries, c1800.

The jug is in excellent condition for its age. This means of course that it shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the base consistent with some 200 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the base.

The jug has a baluster-shaped bowl measuring 4.5 cm (1.8 inches) in diameter at the pouring rim. The bowl is diamond-moulded from top to bottom. The jug is 9 cm (3.6 inches) across at its widest point (pouring spout to outside of the handle) and is 9.5 cm (3.8 inches) in height. The bowl sits on a conical foot which measures 4.5 cm (1.8 inches) in diameter. The handle was first applied to the top of the bowl and then finished off at the bottom of the bowl with a curlicue. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any other obvious evidence of restoration. There are a couple of tiny inclusions in the metal of the bowl dating from manufacture. There is a collector's sticker to the base.

A pretty, period jug weighing in at 155 g. (~ 5 1/2 oz.).

Bristol blue glass is a distinct deep cobalt-coloured glassware produced predominantly in Bristol, England, during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, particularly within the Georgian era.

These items were typically crafted using lead glass combined with cobalt oxide to achieve the signature rich blue hue, often shaped using dip-moulds or half-moulds to create patterned surfaces before being hand-finished.

Authentic pieces often exhibit pontil marks on the base, minor surface irregularities or bubbles indicative of free-blowing or early moulding techniques, and a characteristic heavy weight due to lead content.

Coloured glassware provides a vivid focal point when displayed on open shelving, sideboards, or windowsills where natural light can illuminate the deep pigments.

Antique glass should be washed by hand using lukewarm water and mild detergent, avoiding harsh abrasives, extreme temperature changes, and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight to prevent degradation.
