Georgian Cup Bowl Sunderland Bridge Engraved Rummer

19th century
Description

This is an English, Georgian, engraved Sunderland Bridge rummer glass dating from the early 19th century, c1820.

The erection of the Sunderland Road Bridge in 1796 was a major engineering feat, having to be of single span to accommodate the tall ships that needed to pass under it as they negotiated the Wear. Some 50,000 people attended the opening alone and it acted as a tourist attraction for decades, giving the enterprising glass houses a ready market for memorabilia such as this rummer. The quality of engraving varies dramatically on Sunderland Bridge rummers and this particular one is at the top end of the spectrum as can be seen from the images.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. This means, of course, that it shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot.

The glass has a cup-shaped bowl measuring 9.5 cm (3.8 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is beautifully engraved on one side with a two masted ship passing under the newly erected Sunderland Road Bridge and on the other with the letters "JC"(?). The bowl sits on a capstan stem and a lemon squeezer foot which measures 6 cm (2.4 inches) across. The glass is 12.6 cm (5 inches) in height. The foot is in remarkably good condition for this form with only a few small chips to the corners and cut facets as can be seen in the relevant image. There are no other chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. There is a collector's sticker to the top of the foot and another to the bottom of the foot.

It is made from English lead metal. It weighs 310 g. (~ 11 oz.).

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian rummer is a robust type of British drinking vessel produced from the late 18th century through the early 19th century. Typically crafted from heavy lead glass, these glasses feature a spacious bowl, a short stem, and a sturdy foot, often decorated with wheel-engraved commemorative or maritime motifs.

Georgian glassmakers utilised lead glass, also known as flint glass, which provided high clarity, density, and refractive brilliance. Rummers were hand-blown, and complex decorative elementssuch as square lemon squeezer baseswere created using press moulds, while surface imagery was added via copper-wheel engraving.

Authentic period pieces typically exhibit minor glass inclusions, air bubbles, and natural wear pattern scratching on the underside of the base. The weight of lead glass, distinct tooling marks along the stem, and crisp copper-wheel engraving are key characteristics of original 18th- and early 19th-century production.

Antique glass vessels can be displayed inside illuminated glass cabinets, on polished wooden sideboards, or arranged alongside open shelving collections. Pairing historic glassware with contrasting surfaces like dark timber or marble accentuates the clarity and detailed engraving of the glass.

Hand wash antique glass using lukewarm water and mild dish soap with a soft sponge, avoiding extreme temperature shifts that cause thermal shock. Dry thoroughly with a lint-free microfibre cloth, and never submerge historic glass in dishwashers.
