This is an English, Georgian, engraved Sunderland Bridge rummer glass dating from the early 19th century, c1820. The erection of the Sunderland Road Bridge in 1796 was a major engineering feat, having to be of single span to accommodate the tall ships that needed to pass under it as they negotiated the Wear. Some 50,000 people attended the opening alone and it acted as a tourist attraction for decades, giving the enterprising glass houses a ready market for memorabilia such as this rummer. The quality of engraving varies dramatically on Sunderland Bridge rummers and this particular one is at the top end of the spectrum as can be seen from the images.The glass is in excellent condition for its age. This means, of course, that it shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot. The glass has a cup-shaped bowl measuring 9.5 cm (3.8 inches) in diameter at the rim.
