Ruby flash glass became widely popular during the nineteenth century, particularly across Bohemia and Britain. Artisans applied a thin outer layer of copper or gold-infused red glass over a clear base, which was then cut or etched through to create vivid contrasting patterns.

The vessel was initial mouth-blown using clear glass before receiving a thin outer skin of colored glass. Once cooled, master craftsmen used copper wheels and acid-etching techniques to slice through the ruby layer, exposing the transparent glass beneath.
