Victorian fish slices became popular during the 19th century as specialized dining became a staple of middle and upper-class households, often featuring elaborate pierced and engraved designs tailored for serving course-specific dishes.

These pieces were typically crafted from sterling silver using hand-piercing, chasing, and engraving techniques, frequently fitted with hollow or solid handles depending on the maker and period.

Authentic pieces bear British hallmarks stamped into the metal, indicating the assay office, date letter, makers mark, and the lion passant denoting sterling silver purity.

They can be displayed within glass cabinets, mounted in shadow boxes, or utilized functionally during formal dining occasions to add historical texture to a tablescape.

Antique silver should be cleaned sparingly using a specialized non-abrasive silver polish and a soft cloth, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can strip away desirable patina.
