Skeleton clocks emerged during the 19th century, gaining popularity in Britain during the Victorian era as horologists sought to display the intricate mechanics and gear trains of timepieces by stripping away the traditional dial and case.

These timepieces typically feature open-worked brass or gilded brass plates and frames, hand-cut steel wheels, jewelled pivot holes, and are usually protected by a blown glass dome resting on a marble or wooden base.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit hand-finished brass work with visible file marks, blued steel hands and screws, fusee movements, and thick blown glass domes with slight imperfections rather than modern machine-extruded glass.

Placing the clock on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or desk allows the transparent glass dome and exposed brass movement to catch the light, adding a focal point that bridges traditional craftsmanship with contemporary minimalist spaces.

Keep the clock out of direct sunlight to prevent oil degradation, handle the glass dome with extreme care using clean gloves, and have the mechanical movement professionally serviced every few years by an accredited horologist.
