Pair of Canton Porcelain Hand Painted Vases, China, Late 19th Century

19th century
Description

The vases feature polychrome enamel overglaze decoration. This decoration includes a palette characterized by opaque pink enamel, in addition to other colors such as greens, blues, and yellows. The decoration on the left vase includes panels with human figures in scenes. The right vase displays floral and foliate motifs, along with depictions of birds and butterflies. Applied handles, rendered in forms resembling mythological creatures, are present on the neck of each vase. These handles incorporate gilt accents. The term "Famille Rose" refers to a specific enamel color palette, notably incorporating a distinctive pink pigment derived from colloidal gold, which is mixed with an opaque white enamel (boli bai) to achieve variations in tone and shading. Famille Rose porcelain emerged during the Qing Dynasty, influenced by European enameling techniques introduced to China. This style gained prominence and was widely produced for both domestic and export markets during the 18th and 19th centuries. Pieces specifically decorated for export were often referred to as "Canton Famille Rose."

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Canton porcelain refers to Chinese decorative export wares produced primarily in the port city of Guangzhou (Canton) during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Manufactured to satisfy western demand, these pieces featured distinctive overglaze polychrome enamels portraying narrative court scenes, flora, and fauna.

These items were crafted from fine white hard-paste porcelain kaolin clay fired at high temperatures. The surface details were applied using vibrant overglaze enamel pigments and gilded accents, which were then subjected to a secondary, lower-temperature firing process.

Authentic pieces feature slightly raised overglaze enameling that can be felt by hand, alongside subtle variations in paint application and firing characteristics. Historical export pieces frequently lack modern printed maker marks, exhibiting unglazed foot rims and age-appropriate wear to the gilding.

A pair of decorative porcelain vases works effectively as a symmetrical arrangement on a fireplace mantelpiece, console table, or sideboard. The rich narrative panels and bright enamels provide architectural balance and visual texture against neutral backboards.

Dust gently using a soft, dry natural-bristle brush or microfiber cloth. Avoid immersion in water, chemical cleansers, or abrasive sponges, as moisture and harsh rubbing can strip delicate gilding and overglaze enamel decoration.
