The baluster form, characterised by a rounded body tapering down to a narrow base, gained prominence in British silver during the 18th century and experienced a revival during the Victorian era with elaborate ornamentation.

These pieces were typically crafted from sterling silver using traditional techniques such as raising, casting for feet and handles, and hand-chasing or repousse work for surface decoration.

Authenticity is verified through British hallmarks stamped on the metal, which typically include a makers mark, standard mark, town mark, and a date letter corresponding to the reign of Queen Victoria.

An antique silver jug can be integrated into contemporary dining or living spaces by using it as a striking floral vase on a sideboard or displaying it within a glass-fronted cabinet to add metallic texture.

Antique silver should be cleaned sparingly using specialised silver polish and a soft cloth to avoid damaging delicate chased details, and stored in a low-humidity environment to minimise tarnishing.
