Arts and Crafts Silver Cream Jug

1900 - 1920
Description

A good example of a small sterling silver cream jug with a generous pouring spout and round foot. It has an attractive hand beaten planished finish giving it a distinct arts and crafts style.

It is clearly hallmarked for Birmingham, 1916 and the maker A.E.Jones. It weighs approximately 107g.

It is in good condition for its age. There are some faint surface marks and a small dent on the foot (see photo) but no other major damages and overall it displays well. It has been gently cleaned and polished and is ready for use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Arts and Crafts movement emphasised handcrafted production, visible structural details, and hand-hammered surfaces rather than machine-manufactured finishes. Silverware from this period typically features organic shapes, geometric handles, and subtle planishing marks left by the silversmith.

These items were primarily crafted from sterling silver, formed through hand-raising techniques and finished with planishing hammers to create texture. Handles were often cast separately and soldered, while hallmarks were stamped directly into the body or rim.

Authentic pieces carry official assay office hallmarks indicating silver purity, city of manufacture, and date letters, alongside registered makers marks. Visual indicators include distinct, slightly irregular hand-planished surfaces and hand-forged structural elements.

A silver cream jug can be placed on a dining sideboard, styled on a wooden tray, or incorporated into a display on kitchen dressers. It functions as a decorative tabletop object or as a small vessel for dried botanicals.

Silver should be cleaned using a specialised silver polishing cloth or a mild silver cream applied with a soft sponge. Avoid abrasive cleansers, rinse thoroughly with warm water, and store in tarnish-resistant cloth away from high humidity.
