19th Century Egyptian Revival Mantel Clock By D. Munsey Of Cambridge C. 1880s

A fine Egyptian Revival mantel clock retailed by D. Munsey of Cambridge, circa 1880s, black marble and slate clock case with elaborate bronze mounts.
 
The architectural case is surmounted by a finely cast bronze sphinx. Flanking the dial are two standing figures in the form of Egyptian deities or guardians, recalling the God Osiris (lord of the underworld and rebirth). Bottom of the clock case is further decorated with a winged scarab.
 
The circular dial, with gilt Roman numerals and jewelled gilt bezel, is signed “D. Munsey, Cambridge”, refering to David Munsey, a distinguished Cambridge jeweller and goldsmith who established his firm on Market Hill in 19th Century. Initially trading as David Munsey, the business became Munsey & Co. Ltd in 1901 and continued under the Jackson family into the 20th century, later merging into Northern Goldsmiths.
