Antique Japanese Imari Vase

Description

A good 19th century Japanese Imari vase in perfect condition with deep bold colours and a lovely design. The vase dates from around 1880 and is in hard paste porcelain with hand painted decoration.

The classic Imari design has stylised trees and flower foliage in typical strong blues and red ironstone with applied gilt detail.

A very nice example in super condition.

The vase measures 26 cms high by 16 cms in diameter.

Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ceramics produced in the Arita area of Hizen province and exported from the port of Imari. It is characterised by its distinctive palette combining underglaze cobalt blue with overglaze iron red and gold detailing.

These pieces are crafted from fine white china clay fired at high temperatures. The decoration is created through a multi-stage process involving underglaze cobalt painting, high-temperature firing, followed by hand-painted enamel and gold leaf application before a final lower-temperature firing.

Authentic pieces display characteristic production features such as spur marks on the base, slight irregularities in hand-painted details, and genuine wear to the gilding. The iron-red enamelling often shows subtle variations in tone, and the cobalt blue underglaze may bleed slightly into the white glaze layer.

An Imari vase works as a focal piece on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or console table within modern or traditional settings. Combining its bold colour palette with muted background tones accentuates the high-contrast floral patterns and gilding.
