Georgian Jacobite-engraved Multi Spiral Air Twist Wine Glass, Trumpet Bowl

18th century
Description

This is a scarce Georgian, English multi spiral air twist wine glass of Jacobite significance dating from the middle of the 18th century, c1750.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot commensurate with some 250 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.

The glass has a trumpet-shaped bowl measuring 6 cm (2.4 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is engraved with Jacobite symbols including an open six-petal rose symbolising James Stuart, the Old Pretender, open and closed rose buds symbolising Bonny Prince Charlie and Henry, his sons, an oak leaf symbolising the Boscobel oak and a six-pointed star. The bowl sits on a multi spiral air twist stem and a conical foot which measures 7.1 cm (2.8 inches) in diameter. The glass is 15.5 cm (6.2 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. There are a couple of unburst bubbles in the metal of the bowl which date from manufacture.

Lead glass weighing in at 205 g. (~ 7 oz.).
