Famille Rose, known in Chinese as yangcai (foreign colours), emerged during the Qing dynasty in the early 18th century. It is characterised by an opaque pink enamel derived from colloidal gold, allowing for nuanced shading and detailed botanical or figurative motifs.

These pieces are crafted from high-fired white porcelain clay, hand-painted using overglaze polychrome enamels, and frequently finished with gilt highlights. The traditional method involves multiple firings to set the intricate underglaze and overglaze colours.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit age-appropriate wear to the enamels and gilding, hand-painted brushwork with natural irregularities, and characteristic weight and paste consistency typical of the Qing dynasty period.

They can be displayed as statement accent pieces on a mantelpiece, console table, or within a bookcase to introduce rich colour, cultural history, and textural contrast to modern schemes.

Clean gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove dust. Avoid using chemical cleaners, water immersion, or abrasive materials, which can damage fragile overglaze enamels and historical gilding.
