Samuel Marti Tortoiseshell Mantel Clock - Retailed by the Goldsmiths Company

Description

A highly attractive tortoiseshell and gilt brass mantel clock by Samuel Marti in 18th century style.

Dating to c.1890 and in excellent order throughout, it is formed in the style of the bracket clock its case is veneered with tortoiseshell and has gilt brass mounts, mouldings, feet, finials and carrying handle. The white enamel dial has swags of flowers draped between the numbers and is further labelled for the prestigious Goldsmiths Company on Regent Street in London W1.

Overhauled and complete with winding key its French eight day movement strike the hour and half hour on a coiled gong. The clock maker Samuel Marti was active in Paris in the mid 19th century. In 1860 it's known that his premises were situated at Le Pays de Montbeliard and in 1863 Marti was working the other celebrated clock maker's Japy Frères and Roux in promoting their clock movements.
