Large Japanese Porcelain Flared Vase. Lacquer Over Black Paint, with Koi. Circa 1880.

The porcelain vase deeply lacquered with inset decorated panels in rich red, black and gold japanese colours. The main panels finely decorated with birds, trees and flowers set against landscape / water-pond and foliage background, with superb Koi inserts. The side panels also decorated with extremely fine gold-line cross-hatching. A very difficult technique.

Condition: Good unrestored condition. Small chips and some losses to flared rim. Black lacquer missing mainly around the base (stable and not flaking).

A heavy piece at 5Kg approx.

This large Japanese porcelain vase dates from the Meiji period around 1880. Finished in black paint and deep lacquer with rich red, black and gold colours, the piece stands 60 cm high, 27 cm wide, and 27 cm deep, weighing approximately 5 kg. The surface displays a flared crimped rim, fine gold-line cross-hatching, a central roundel depicting a pink and red koi carp, and side panels decorated with floral motifs, trees and birds against a landscape background. Small chips and losses appear on the flared rim, along with missing black lacquer around the base. Today, this vase serves as a striking decorative vessel suited for display on top of a sideboard in a living room, hallway or dining room.
