This early 20th century Scottish mell decanter is a practical and decorative piece of glassware made from vivid blue hand-blown glass. The design includes a rounded base, a slender neck, a flared rim, and a cork stopper topped with a hallmarked silver-coloured spherical finial. The smooth surface reflects the light, showing clear glass and the distinctive traditional mell silhouette associated with the Scottish Victorian style. Standing 24 cm high and 14 cm wide, the vessel sits securely on a flat base. In a home today, it is well suited for display on a sideboard top in a dining room, study, or gentleman's library, or for serving beverages during gatherings. Decanters of this form work effectively as standalone display pieces or as functional tableware. The striking blue colour contrasts with traditional wood furniture surfaces. The polished spherical stopper offers a tactile grip, while the narrow neck prevents spills when pouring. The compact proportions allow the decanter to fit comfortably among other glassware or bar accessories on shelving and side tables.

FAQs

A mell decanter is a traditional glassware form characterised by a wide, flattened bulbous base and a tall, slender neck, historically produced in Scotland and Britain for serving spirits or wine.

Antique mell decanters are typically crafted from hand-blown coloured or clear glass, often fitted with stoppers made of matching glass, cork, or silver-plated metal finials.

Authentic hand-blown pieces often display a pontil mark on the base, slight asymmetric variations in the glass wall thickness, and gentle wear on the resting surface consistent with age.

Place the decanter on a timber bar cart, sideboard, or window sill where natural light can accentuate the vivid blue glass and highlighted metal stopper.

Wash interior surfaces gently with warm water and mild detergent using soft cleaning beads or a non-abrasive brush, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners that may affect metal stoppers or corks.
