Japanese Porcelain Flared Vase with Lacquer Over Black Paint. Circa 1880.

The porcelain vase deeply lacquered with inset decorated panels in rich red, black and gold japanese colours. The main panels finely decorated with birds, trees and flowers set against landscape / water-pond foliage background. The side panels decorated with extremely fine gold-line cross-hatching. A very difficult technique. [Stand not included].

Condition: Excellent condition with no damage to the vase.

Height = 47cm ; Diameter = 20cm (at top of vase).

FAQs

During the Meiji period (18681912), Japanese artisans combined ceramic craftsmanship with traditional urushi lacquer technique. Porcelain vessels were coated in dark lacquer and decorated with gilded metallic powders and paints to create detailed motifs specifically for export to Western collectors.

These vessels feature a porcelain or stoneware core decorated with sap derived from the urushi tree. Gilded highlights were applied using gold powder or metallic pigment (maki-e technique), accompanied by black and iron-red lacquer pigments.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-applied urushi lacquer over a ceramic body, displaying slight surface irregularities and fine crackle under magnification. They frequently feature traditional Japanese flora and fauna, such as chrysanthemums and sparrows, framed by geometric geometric borders.

Lacquered porcelain vases function as high-contrast accent pieces when positioned on modern sideboards, dark wooden consoles, or marble hearths. Their dark ground and metallic detailing complement both classic traditional decor and contemporary maximalist interiors.
