Description

A fine quality and unusual German Cuckoo clock with moving eyes feature. The clock is of a fine quality with thirty-hour movement. The simple square case features an enamel dial with a painted scene depicting a rather ferocious looking animal, perhaps a wildcat, Lynx or even a wolf which as the pendulum swings moves the eyes. The clock is in good restored condition, though I think this restoration was some time ago, and is in good original condition with later weights. A very unusual and decorative clock. C.1870.

Automaton and traditional cuckoo clocks originated in the Black Forest region of Germany during the 18th and 19th centuries, renowned for intricate wooden gear systems and moving mechanical figures.

These timepieces typically feature hand-carved solid woods such as walnut, oak, and pine, combined with brass movements, enamel dials, and hand-painted glass or wooden panels.

Authenticity is determined by examining the hand-cut brass gears, the ageing of the timber, hand-painted details on the dial, and makers marks or stamps characteristic of 19th-century workshop production.

Mount the clock as a focal point on a neutral wall to highlight its historic craftsmanship, allowing it to serve as both a functional timekeeper and a conversation piece.

Keep the clock away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity, dust gently with a dry microfiber cloth, and have the mechanical movement professionally serviced every few years.
