Georgian Inlaid Oak Grandfather Longcase Clock

18th century
Description

In The 17th, 18th and 19th Centuries there were a number of Clockmakers with the name Read. Both in the UK and over in the USA.

This Smart Good Quality Clock was made by William Read of Buntingford Hertfordshire England. Circa 1791.

Later at Buntingford, there was Richard Read Circa 1828-39 and another William (II) Circa 1839-74.

The Enamelled Dial Also Carries the Name of its Owner - C. IVEY of Limehouse.

Over the Centuries there have been a number of C. Iveys living around the Limehouse - Shoreditch area of London. The Iveys seem to have been a prominent family. Limehouse being near to the London Docks, the Ivey Family may well have been Sailors and Traded with the States.

With Clockmakers emigrating to the States, Is this how a Clock from a Buntingford Clockmaker Found its way to Limehouse and the Ivey Family?

Eitherway, Over the Years both the Case and the Movement Have Been Much Loved, Well Cared For & Maintained.

The Case is only 81 3/16th inches (under 6ft 10in) or 206.3cm High and Will Suit Many Different House Styles and Sizes. It is in Good Sound Condition in English Oak which has Attractive Graining and Attractive Hand Made Radial Oval Inlay.

The 8 Day Movement Strikes the Hours on a Crisp Clear Bell. Check & Tested - Good Working Order with Seconds Dial and Date Window.

Please contact Robert via Messaging or on 07899 058752 to Discuss. Viewing By Appointment Welcome.

Please Supply your Postcode for Delivery Options. Typically between £65 and £165 - subject to location. Wherever Possible Set Up will be Included in This.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
