Description

Rare Wedgwood Lustre Bud Vases by Daisy Makeig-Jones, Ordinary Lustre Series, c. 1915

An elegant and rare pair of Wedgwood porcelain bud vases designed by Daisy Makeig-Jones around 1915. These vases belong to the early Ordinary Lustre series — the artistic forerunner to her iconic Fairyland Lustre range.

Each vase is gracefully shaped with a slender neck and flared rim, finished in a powder blue lustre glaze with delicate marbling. The bodies are adorned with hand-painted fantastical butterflies in mother-of-pearl tones, highlighted with subtle gilding. The interiors feature mother-of-pearl lustre with soft staining and gold borders — a hallmark of Makeig-Jones’ refined early decorative style.

Marked on the base with the Wedgwood Portland vase mark, printed Wedgwood England, and hand-numbered Z5068.

These are not only exquisite decorative objects but significant pieces of early 20th-century English ceramic art, reflecting the imaginative vision of one of Wedgwood’s most celebrated designers.

Wedgwood lustreware refers to ceramic items finished with metallic glaze effects that create an iridescent sheen, famously developed and expanded by designer Daisy Makeig-Jones during the early 20th century.

These pieces are crafted from fine earthenware ceramics, hand-painted with intricate enamel colours and gilding over a mottled lustre glaze, then fired multiple times to achieve the distinct iridescent finish.

Authentic pieces typically feature the printed Portland vase or Wedgwood backstamp, pattern numbers such as Z5068, and registration marks, alongside the characteristic high-quality hand-gilded detailing and lustrous finish.

Place them on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or side table where their reflective glaze can catch the light, pairing them with minimalist modern decor to let the intricate historical patterns stand out.

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth and avoid using chemical cleaners, abrasive materials, or immersion in water to protect the delicate hand-painted enamel and metallic gilding.
