Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This large-scale 19th-century French provincial blanket box is made from pine with a black, red, and brown original paint finish. The rectangular chest has a hinged top with two recessed panels showing surface wear and exposed wood. The front elevation displays three dark-painted recessed panels separated by narrow carved pilasters, all framed by red decorative mouldings. A small metal keyhole escutcheon sits centrally, and the base rests on a simple plinth. Measuring 67 cm high, 170 cm wide, and 75 cm deep, this storage piece fits well in a hallway, bedroom, or living space to hold blankets or linens while adding rustic farmhouse style to an interior.

FAQs

Originating in rural French regions during the 18th and 19th centuries, blanket boxes served as essential storage chests for household linens, bedding, and textiles, frequently crafted by regional joiners.

These pieces were primarily constructed from solid local softwoods such as pine, using traditional mortise and tenon joinery, often finished with milk paint, hand-carved detailing, or wax polish.

Authentic examples exhibit layered wear patterns on historic paintwork, hand-forged iron hardware or keyholes, and hand-planed timber boards along the interior, back, and underside.

Substantial trunks function effectively as central coffee tables in modern living rooms or positioned at the foot of a bed for hidden storage, introducing texture and contrast.

Preserve original paint by avoiding chemical cleansers, dusting with a soft dry cloth, and applying neutral beeswax sparingly to raw or unpainted timber elements.
