This French Art Nouveau cameo glass vase belongs to the period around 1900. The ovoid body is made from multi-layered cased glass with an acid-etched finish. The decoration presents a dark brown pine tree silhouette against a shaded pink and light blue background, depicting an acid-etched Vosges landscape. A cameo signature is visible on the surface. The piece stands 16.5 cm high. Such a vessel sits well upon a sideboard top within a French Chateau interior style scheme. The smooth, flared rim complements the rounded body, which narrows towards the base to provide stability on flat surfaces. The delicate colour transitions from pale pink at the top through soft blue to deep dark brown at the lower section create a striking visual contrast suitable for display in living areas or dining rooms.

FAQs

Cameo glass is a form of decorative glassware created by fusing multiple layers of differently coloured glass and removing areas to reveal design motifs in relief, popularised by French artists during the Art Nouveau movement in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The process involves applying an acid-resistant substance, such as wax or bitumen, to designated areas of cased glass before submerging the piece in hydrofluoric acid to etch away exposed glass layers.

Authentic pieces typically feature hand-etched or cut relief details with sharp depth variations, distinct signatures integrated into the glass design, and signs of period-appropriate wear on the underside of the base.

Position cameo glass where natural or directional ambient light can filter through the translucent layers, such as on a sideboard top or open shelving unit, to highlight the depth of the landscape silhouettes.

Dust delicately with a soft, lint-free microfibre cloth and clean occasionally with lukewarm water and mild liquid soap, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners, abrasive pads, or immersion in hot water.
