This French Art Nouveau cameo glass vase belongs to the 1920 period. The piece uses acid-etched cameo glass in orange and brown with a polished and frosted finish. A cylindrical neck sits atop a bulbous base, decorated with dark brown acid-etched landscape motifs of trees in the background and water lily pads across the body against a frosted orange ground. The signature appears in the cameo. Measuring 15 cm high and 8 cm wide, the vessel stands on a round foot. The vase works as a decorative display item on a mantelpiece in a living room, hallway, or study. Interior placement suits surfaces with indirect lighting that highlights the etched glass texture and the sunset colour scheme. Maintenance requires gentle cleaning with a soft cloth to preserve the frosted surface.

FAQs

Cameo glass from the Art Nouveau period is a decorative glassware style produced by applying multiple fused layers of contrasting coloured glass, which are then etched or carved away to form raised, multi-dimensional patterns.

Craftsmen layered outer coats of glass over a core body before applying acid-resist compounds to trace precise designs, submerging the vessel in acid baths to expose lower glass layers and create relief motifs.

Authentic pieces feature sharp, acid-etched definition across multiple glass layers, hand-finished wheel-cut details, distinct blown glass bases with pontil marks, and period-appropriate cameo signatures integrated into the design.

Positioning the vase near a natural light source or against a plain neutral backdrop highlights the translucency and colour variations of the etched glass layers without visually overcrowding the surrounding space.

Clean cameo glass using lukewarm water and a mild non-abrasive liquid soap, wiping gently with a soft microfibre cloth and avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or submersion in hot water to prevent thermal stress.
