Burr walnut refers to the figured wood grain obtained from a tree growth or burl, highly prized for its intricate, swirling patterns. It was extensively used during the 18th century and experienced a major revival in Victorian and Edwardian cabinet making.

These pieces typically utilise solid timber frames overlaid with fine veneers of burr walnut, often complemented by boxwood or ebony stringing inlay. Traditional joinery such as dovetail joints are standard for the drawer construction, paired with cast brass or ormolu hardware.

Authenticity is identified through examining the depth of the grain, hand-cut dovetail joints, traditional secondary timbers like oak or pine inside the drawers, and natural age-related patina, oxidation, and wear patterns.

Pairing dark, figured wood with minimalist contemporary decor creates a sophisticated contrast. They function effectively alongside neutral wall colours, modern lighting, and clean-lined upholstery to ground the space.

Preservation requires keeping the wood away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the veneer from splitting or fading. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth and occasional application of appropriate wax polish maintains the finish.
