FAQs

Victorian bedside cabinets evolved during the 19th century as bedroom sizes increased and personal convenience became a priority, often designed as enclosed cupboards or small chests to hold chamber pots and personal items.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over secondary softwoods, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints, brass handles, and plinth bases characteristic of 19th-century cabinetmaking.

Authenticity is identified through construction details such as hand-cut dovetails, timber shrinkage patterns, aged patination on the hardware, and traditional hand-planed surfaces rather than modern machine tooling.

Pairing antique dark wood cabinets with modern minimalist decor, neutral walls, and contemporary lighting creates a balanced transitional scheme that highlights the rich grain of the timber.

Preserve the finish by keeping the timber away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a dry cloth, and occasionally applying a traditional beeswax to nourish the wood.
